Cousin Tony's Brand New Firebird release cathartic, epic new single ‘When This Is Over’
Sometimes you just know…A song comes along that feels so perfect for the times, with a message we’re all feeling, and that totally represents the quality and unique standing of an artist already admired amongst passionate fans “in the know”.
‘When This Is Over’ is that song. A song that is certain to make you feel good and catapult Cousin Tony’s Brand New Firebird to new heights.
After two EPs, two critically acclaimed albums, millions of streams, and an awesome live reputation playing sold out rooms across the country, the ‘Bird is thrilled to be releasing their first new track in two years. And it’s a cracker.
Produced by Stephen Mowat (Gretta Ray, Ali Barter) and mixed by Matthew Neighbour (Middle Kids, The Avalanches, Matt Corby) “When This is Over” is a song about unity, love, and the joy of being together. It was written by the band’s Lachlan Rose and recorded in the midst of the toughest and loneliest two years any of us have known. But it’s more than this. Musically and lyrically ‘When This Is Over’ is an inspiration, and a multi-layered emotional journey.
Cousin Tony’s Lachy Rose explains,
“As far as artistic offerings go, the last thing I felt people needed was a reminder of the pandemic and its consequences. But as it unrolled and began to affect my loved ones so deeply, I started to formulate this hopeful sound that served as some kind of anthemic beacon of times to come. Hearing people talk of their plans to travel, connect, socialise, and party was devastating in its hopeful simplicity, and the phrase “when this is over” was used all too frequently. It wasn’t about dragging people down to the depths of my isolation, but painting this hyper colour vision of the connection - romantic, spiritual, emotional - that awaited us on the other side…”
Referencing the outstanding performances on the recording, Lachy explains that all the players, particularly the singers, were “imagining a visual and emotional moment - people hugging at the airport, friends meeting at the pub, families, festivals. That guttural, emotional human need to connect is central to the songs spirit”
Coincidentally, on the day Melbourne finally opened its borders (after the world’s longest period of lockdown) the headline of the newspaper was “Together At Last”, the repeated mantra of the song’s bridge.
Proudly released by Double Drummer, through Believe, ‘When This Is Over’ will be launched at HOWLER in Melbourne - the first weekend allowing 100% attendance to live gigs in that city.
It’s officially SOLD OUT.
‘When This Is Over’ is the first single from Cousin Tony’s Brand New Firebird’s 3rd album due in 2022, a work in progress that Lachy started writing after the band had to cancel a tour of the US / UK in 2020/21.
It heralds a new and exciting chapter in the continuing upward trajectory of this very special Melbourne band.
